Most of us would agree that physical health is necessary for a long and flourishing ministry, but what about mental health? For many pastors, mental health is at best misunderstood and at worst the last thing to accomplish on a never-ending priority list. The truth is YOU MATTER.
Somewhere in the midst of serving others, we forget the command to “love your neighbor as yourself” to the point where self-care starts to feel selfish. But the people you pour yourself out for every day need you to be your best self. It is not selfish to take Jesus seriously in his command to love the Lord your God with all of your heart, mind, soul, and strength; which simply put is the definition of mental health. Loving God with your mind and pursuing long-term health for your thoughts, emotions, body, and relationships.
Your spouse, kids, neighbors, staff, and church community don’t need you to be superhuman. We have Jesus for that. It’s ok to be broken, in need, and just plain human. Sometimes the best way to serve others is to model this humanity and show them it’s ok to ask for help. If you are finding yourself stressed out, burnt out, or feeling isolated - you are not alone. Put your faith into action and trust that God is big enough to use you just as you are and reach out for support today.
